Our new season is under way and what a start! We have 34 members signed up for the 2013-14 season but we always have room for more! The “writing is on the walls” that the club is definitely gaining in momentum so even if you don’t think you are ready to join, by all means attend a meeting or two and see what all the “fireworks” is about.

Tom’s Work on Display

Photo of a dog pouncing in long grass Club member Tom Jenks has brought a taste of African wildlife to the Full Spectrum Gallery in the back of Foto Art.  On display until the end of June, you’ll find a terrific array of images from Tom’s recent trip to Okavango Delta region of Botswana last December. You’ll find African Hunting Dogs hunting with willful intensity, a Yellow-billed Oxpecker playfully pecking, Elephants gorgeously lit in all their elephantine glory, and many more. From planning the trip, to taking the photos, to processing the photos for print, to framing the photos, to the wall, it’s a long journey of which the end results are something any photographer would be proud.

Botswana wasn’t Tom’s first African photo tour and happily a handful of images from his 2011 Tanzania trip snuck into the mix (including one of my favorites- a pack of well-arranged thirsty Zebras). You can also find some of his work on his gallery page, including a few from Africa and a few from Camera Club ‘theme nights’. Be sure to take the trip to check out the gallery display the next time you’re near Foto Art and escape from our May snowfall into the piece of Africa Tom brought back!

Tom will also be presenting a slideshow of images from his trip at the Camera Club meeting this Tuesday, May 14th, 7pm at Foto Art and is willing to do presentations to interested groups.

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day

Dittmer-2013-400Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day is fast approaching, Sunday April 28th this year. It’s a fun event where people from around the world take photos using any kind of pinhole camera they like, then upload their favorite of the day to an online gallery. Even if you aren’t a pinhole enthusiast, it’s worth checking out the website as the gallery progresses throughout the day with photos from participants around the globe.

There’s lot’s more information to be found on the organisers website. Be sure to check out the gallery which lets you search past events, in particular see the 2010 Ontario entries which has a few familiar names;).

A few years ago a local pinhole enthusiast, Steve Irvine, held a workshop where camera club members built their own pinhole cameras out of coffee cans. Lynn compiled the instructions into a brief pinhole tutorial for a refresher or a better idea of of the mechanics behind this sort of thing. Be sure to check out Steve’s website as well, he’s also a potter and has combined his skills to make some beautiful (and functional!) ceramic cameras.

A Special Guest in October

We have great news! Barrie photographer Don Komarechka is coming to our October meeting to do a presentation on his technique of capturing his incredible snowflake images. You won’t want to miss this one. Mark it on your calendar for October 8, 2013.

Don is working on a book that showcases his snowflake photography and currently is looking for funding to get the book to print. You can help by contributing to the cause. The more you contribute, the more you get for your money.

Some people have wondered how this funding works. For more information on that please visit the following link: http://bit.ly/J4cM4Y.

If Don’s book is ready on time he will have some copies with him in October, so if you don’t happen to join the campaign, you can pick one up at the meeting. Any more questions or concerns about the campaign can be left in the comments on this post or on our Facebook Page.

If you’re into podcasts, you can catch Don on This Week in Photo with Frederick Van Johnson. Now Don doesn’t appear on every episode but he is becoming a bit of a regular. You can watch TWiP at http://bit.ly/ZnWr4v and if you scroll through the episodes you will see the ones featuring Don.

Information about the Art Banner

We recently wrote a post about the 2013 Owen Sound Art Banners and there may be some confusion regarding the submission specifications.

Artists are to submit images that are “print ready” and are to be a maximum of 2000 pixels on the longest side. The confusion lies in the other important part of a digital image size, resolution, or pixels per inch (ppi). A print ready file will have a ppi resolution of at least 240, and some folks may like to increase that number to 300. To be sure your file is accepted for consideration by the committee, go with a resolution of 300 ppi.

If you’re a little unsure of how to size an image, be sure to take a look at our page on Re-sizing Images in the Tutorials section of the site.
