At our meeting last night a few members talked about nearby places they like to visit for photographic purposes. Here are a few of those suggestions, subject to my memory.

Tom’s Work on Display
Club member Tom Jenks has brought a taste of African wildlife to the Full Spectrum Gallery in the back of Foto Art. On display until the end of June, you’ll find a terrific array of images from Tom’s recent trip to Okavango Delta region of Botswana last December. You’ll find African Hunting Dogs hunting with willful intensity, a Yellow-billed Oxpecker playfully pecking, Elephants gorgeously lit in all their elephantine glory, and many more. From planning the trip, to taking the photos, to processing the photos for print, to framing the photos, to the wall, it’s a long journey of which the end results are something any photographer would be proud.
Botswana wasn’t Tom’s first African photo tour and happily a handful of images from his 2011 Tanzania trip snuck into the mix (including one of my favorites- a pack of well-arranged thirsty Zebras). You can also find some of his work on his gallery page, including a few from Africa and a few from Camera Club ‘theme nights’. Be sure to take the trip to check out the gallery display the next time you’re near Foto Art and escape from our May snowfall into the piece of Africa Tom brought back!
Tom will also be presenting a slideshow of images from his trip at the Camera Club meeting this Tuesday, May 14th, 7pm at Foto Art and is willing to do presentations to interested groups.
Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day
Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day is fast approaching, Sunday April 28th this year. It’s a fun event where people from around the world take photos using any kind of pinhole camera they like, then upload their favorite of the day to an online gallery. Even if you aren’t a pinhole enthusiast, it’s worth checking out the website as the gallery progresses throughout the day with photos from participants around the globe.
There’s lot’s more information to be found on the organisers website. Be sure to check out the gallery which lets you search past events, in particular see the 2010 Ontario entries which has a few familiar names;).
A few years ago a local pinhole enthusiast, Steve Irvine, held a workshop where camera club members built their own pinhole cameras out of coffee cans. Lynn compiled the instructions into a brief pinhole tutorial for a refresher or a better idea of of the mechanics behind this sort of thing. Be sure to check out Steve’s website as well, he’s also a potter and has combined his skills to make some beautiful (and functional!) ceramic cameras.

And be sure to check out the 2012 Banner Images, including one from club member Lynn Reket
December Meeting
Our December meeting is tonight, Dec. 11th. Meet us at Foto Art at 7pm (the back entrance will be open) for:
– A wander downtown photographing the Festival of Northern Lights (or anything that catches your fancy).
– Nibbles and warm apple cider.
– “What/Where is it?” Theme slide show.
Items to bring (recommended by Lynn):
– your own mug for the cider, if you wish some
– tripod is a must unless you are doing free hand lens painting
– camera and gear to protect it from rain or wet snow (Plastic covering or umbrella, etc)
– a small flaslight or head light for shining on your camera controls so you can see your dials/settings
– warm clothing if the temps drop. We will leave the “clubhouse” open for coming in and out from time to time.
Cindie’s Work on Display
At the back entrance of Foto Art is the Full Spectrum Gallery, which features a rotating display of local photographers or camera clubs photos. Currently hanging for your viewing pleasure is club member Cindie Fearnall’s nature photography and some of her terrific pet portraits. Great skill coupled with the patience to use it on furry targets is evident in this work!
If you can’t make it to town don’t despair, you can find Cindie’s photographs online at www.photosbycindie.com or in the camera clubs Flickr group. Keep up the great work Cindie!
Gallery Maintenance
I’ve removed a few old comments on the Members Gallery Pages that referenced absent pictures. If I’ve missed any, please let me know. ~Brian
ps. I know about the flamingo/rainbow one, but the rest of the comment was sweet so I let it stand
